Day 45 San Diego Zoo Trip

Good Morning kindergarten! Today we are going on a virtual field trip to the San Diego Zoo. The zoo is always one of my favorite places to visit and the San Diego Zoo has many live cameras where you can actually watch what the animals are doing at this very moment. I figured since we talked about building forts last week, it would be a good idea to learn more about some animal builders. Take a look: https://kids.sandiegozoo.org/index.php/videos/kids-corner-episode-1-animal-builders

Here are some of my favorite other videos and live cameras from the zoo. Feel free to explore around.

For today’s activity, draw and write about your favorite animal that you saw at the zoo. It can be one of the animals that I shared with you, or one you discovered on your own. Have fun at the zoo!

Counting on 5-27-20

Hi Kindergarten,
Today we are going to practice counting on by playing an addition game with dice.  Remember counting on means you can start counting at any number and go on to another number.  So if I want to start at 6 and count to 10, I would say "6, 7, 8, 9, 10."  I would not start counting with 1.
So you can use two dice, roll, add, and write down the addition number sentence.
For example -  I roll a 6 and a 4.  I'm going to say  6 and then count on to figure out the total.  I will write the number sentence as 6+4=10.
If you don't have dice you can use pennies to make two numbers to add together.  Make five addition sentences and send a picture on Remind to your teacher.

Have a great day!
💙,
Mrs. W.

Day 44 - Rhyming Words

Today's Assignments:

  • Complete Rhyming Scavenger Hunt (see below)
  • Measure a toy using pennies or other coins (from activity calendar)
  • 15 minutes of math on IXL or Khan Academy
  • 15 minutes of reading on Raz-Kids or another type of reading

Hi kindergarten!  Today we are going to do some practicing with rhyming words.  Remember, when words rhyme, they have different beginning sounds, but their endings sound the same, or they are in the same word family.  Dig and pig rhyme because they both end with the /ig/ sound.  Two and chew also rhyme because they end with the /oo/ sound.  All the words in the /at/ family…like cat, bat, mat, rat, chat, hat all rhyme with each other.  They all have different beginning sounds, but the same ending.  But cow and cat do not rhyme because they have different word endings.  Check out these songs to help you practice identifying rhyming and non-rhyming words.
Now that you’ve listened to some songs with rhyming, you’re going to practice coming up with some rhymes by listening to a story.  In this silly book, Rhyming Dust Bunnies, three dust bunnies help come up with good rhymes, but Bob, the fourth bunny doesn’t seem to be very good at rhyming…. Listen to it now.

Poor Bob!  He wasn’t very good at rhyming, but he tried so hard to keep the dust bunnies from being vacuumed up!  Were you able to come up with any of the rhymes the dust bunnies created?  Were you able to create any rhymes they didn’t think of?  Next, I want you to play some of these online rhyming games.  Remember, rhyming words have the same ending sounds, so it helps if you say the words aloud to decide if they rhyme or not.  Notice, again, that most pairs of rhyming words are from the same word families.

For today’s assignment, I want you to go on a rhyming scavenger hunt in or around your house.  I’m attaching a list below.  For every item on it, I want you to find and record at least one object that rhymes with it.  You could take a picture of the object, draw a picture of it, or write it down with a word.  For example, the first item on the list says “find something that rhymes with bee.”  So, I might draw a picture of a key because “bee” and “key” both have the same /ee/ sound at the end.  Have fun!

Day 43 Mrs. Kibbey Explores Rainbows

Happy Friday Kindergarten Friends:

Please listen to the two Rainbow Songs.  Think about how they are the same and different.  Tell someone (Mom, Dad, brother or sister) something you have learned about the two songs.  Can you dance to one? What do both songs tell us that is the same?

Have a wonderful weekend! Be sure to get outside and play☺

Day 42 Build a Fort

Good Morning Kindergartners! Since it has been rainy all week, I thought it would be a good idea to investigate ways to make an awesome inside fort. Here are a few videos about the science behind fort building.

There are many materials you can use to build a fort including blankets, pillows, empty boxes, and chairs. Can you build a fort in your house? If you were to build a fort, how would you design it? Think through the steps you would have to do to build your fort. For today’s activity, plan how you would build a fort in your house. Draw and write about the fort you would design. If it’s okay with your parents, you can also build your fort using materials around your house. Don’t forget to clean up after you are done playing in your fort and put all the pillows and chairs back where they belong.

Here are some pictures of the blanket fort I built yesterday:

Day 41 - Sight Words (some, this, with)

Today’s Assignments:
·       Sight word scavenger hunt
·       Write all the letters in the alphabet using lowercase letters (from activity calendar)
·       15 minutes of IXL or Khan Academy math
·       15 minutes of Raz-Kids or other reading

Good morning, kindergarten!  Today we are going to do some more sight word practice.  Remember, when we read sight words, we want to be able to read them right away, so we shouldn’t be stretching out the words.  Knowing all those sight words takes lots of practice, so it’s important that you are practicing your sight word flashcards every day.  Our focus words today are somethis, and with.  First, watch these videos to help you practice each of these words.  Remember, it’s okay to watch the videos more than once!

Now, you are going to practice reading those words.  Try to shout out the word before I do.  I’m also going to include the words you practiced last week and the week before, as well as some other words that you should know.  Ready?
How did you do?  Remember, if you missed any, you can always watch the video again and keep practicing until you recognize all the words.  If you’re ready to move on, for today’s activity, I want you to go on a sight word scavenger hunt and make a list of the words you find.  You can, of course, search for sight words in your books, but try to find them in some other creative places, too.  Look on labels or on boxes, maybe look in a magazine or in the directions for a game. Try to find at least ten different sight words throughout your house.  When you’re done, practice your sight word flashcards and check out the videos below for more practice.

Today’s Assignments:
  • Rainbow write sight words
  • Write all the letters in the alphabet using uppercase letters (from activity calendar)
  • 15 minutes of IXL or Khan Academy math
  • 15 minutes of Raz-Kids or other reading

Good morning, kindergarten!  Today we are going to practice a few more tricky sight words to help us become better readers.  Remember, when we read sight words, we want to be able to read them right away, so we shouldn’t be stretching out the words.  Remembering all those sight words takes lots of practice, so it’s important that you are practicing your sight word flashcards every day.  Our focus words today are come, have, and went.  First, watch these videos to help you practice each of these words.  Remember, it’s okay to watch the videos more than once!

Now that you’ve watched all three videos, I want you to to practice reading those words.  Try to shout out the word before I do.  I’m also going to include the words you practiced last week with Mrs. Anderson, and some other words that you should know.  Ready?

For today’s activity, I want you to write these sight words with the colors of the rainbow.  Make sure that you are using lowercase letters when you write, and practice forming  your letters correctly.  Then, I want you to practice your sight word flashcards.  If you already know all your sight words, I want you to write a sentence using each of today’s words.  For example, I went for a walk today.  When you’re done, check out the links below for online interactive games to give you even more practice with your sight words.

https://www.abcya.com/games/dolch_sight_word_bingo (most students will be using the pre-primer words; if those are too easy, feel free to select the primer or first grade options)

Addition number stories 5-12-20

Good Morning Kindergarten,
We are going to work on some math today.  We are going to write some addition number stories.  Remember that add, plus, and +, mean we are putting numbers together to get a bigger number.
This, = , is called the equals sign.  Here are two addition number stories.

I had 5 monster trucks.  I got 3 more monster trucks.  How many do I have in all?  8.

Matthew made 4 cakes.
Nate made 3 cakes.
How many cakes in all? 7
4 + 3 = 7

Day 35 How to Make Playdough

Today's Assignments:
1) Write a How To story with 3-4 Steps
2) Read at least 15 minutes
3) Check your activity calendar

Good morning kindergarten. For the last few weeks, you have been learning how to make different things and how to write a how to or procedural story. Today I am going to show you how to make playdough. Remember to pay close attention to the steps so we can write them down together later.

My making playdough videos are split into two parts.

After we have cleaned up the kitchen it is time to talk about how to write about making playdough. Watch this video to see how I wrote about making playdough.

For today’s activity try writing another how to story teaching us how to make or do something that you know how to do. Think about 3-4 steps that are needed to complete the activity and draw and write the instructions so someone else could follow them. I look forward to seeing your how to stories today.

Day 34 Eric Carle Author Study

Today’s Assignments:
-Watch these videos to learn about Eric Carle
-Spent 15 minutes on IXL or Khan Academy
-Help Mom or Dad with at least 1 chore.

Good Morning Kindergarten! Today’s author study is one I always save until the end of the school year, Eric Carle. Many of you have read his stories before, but did you know he has a unique method for making his illustrations? Here are some of his most famous stories, one even read by the author himself!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar: https://youtu.be/vYG1tLt5GCQ
The Very Lonely Firefly: https://youtu.be/_XrPyF4Mpl4
The Very Quiet Cricket: https://youtu.be/KW_7Ud7qiAA
The Very Busy Spider: https://youtu.be/Dfr5DWThSmA

When Eric Carle makes his illustrations, he first paints pieces of paper with different colors and patterns. Then he lets them dry and cuts them up to make a collage. Check out this video about how you could paint or color your own Eric Carle paper: https://youtu.be/huGGpLYitTQ

This video is very long, but even the first 5 minutes of it are worth watching. It is an interview with Eric Carle where he shows how he makes pictures and books and why he decided to be an author or picture writer. https://youtu.be/0wXWLaVX8Mw

There is no assignment to turn in to your teacher today, but if you would like to make your own Eric Carle collage pictures we would love to see them. Enjoy the weekend!

Day 32 Sight Words

Assignments for today:
  1. Practice your sight word flashcards
  2. 15 minutes of IXL or Khan academy math
  3. 15 minutes of Raz Kids or other reading

Good Morning Kindergarten! Today I want to focus on a couple of tricky sight words that we should be practicing as much as possible to make us better readers. As a quick reminder to our parents, when we practice sight words, we do not sound out the word saying each letter sound. Instead we should be able to shout it out in less than 5 seconds. If we don’t know what it is, it is better to just tell us instead of asking us to figure it out.

Our focus words today are said, are, and here. First watch these videos to help you practice the sight words.

Now let’s see if you remember those words. Watch this video and shout out the sight words as I write them. I’m going to mix in a few others that you should know too.

For today’s activity, I would like you to practice writing the sight words 3 times on a piece of paper and reading them back to a parent or sibling. If this is too easy because you already know these words, I would like you to write me sentences with each word in it. For example, “There are 3 ducks in the pond”

Here are some other sight word practice videos to help you remember more words.

Challenge! For all those students who already know all of the sight words that we sent home to practice, I would like you to learn this new list of words using flashcards or videos like the ones I showed you.

Comparing measurements 5/7/20

Remember on Monday how we measured using LEGO minifigs and crayons.  Today we are going to choose one measuring tool and compare the length of some toys.

So my LEGO A-wing is 10 pennies long.  My LEGO Snowspeeder is 8 pennies long.  The A-wing is longer than the Snowspeeder.  The Snowspeeder is shorter than the A-Wing.

Here are Jessie and Woody from Toy Story.  Which one is longer?  I am going to use LEGO to measure.  All my Legos are the same size.
Jessie is 5 Legos long.
Woody is 6 Legos long.
Woody is longer than Jessie.

Assignment: Compare the length of 2 toys using a nonstandard measure (pennies, paper clips, lego etc.)  Draw a picture of your work.  Write the length of each.  Write which one was longer.  Send a picture to your teacher on Remind.

Please read for 15 minutes on RAZ kids.  https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login
